Horse Bedding Materials

Historically there have been few suitable options when it comes to horse bedding. Straw tended to be favourite due to being readily available and relatively cheap. However, recent increases in fuel prices and poor harvests have resulted in rapidly increasing straw prices. There is then the problem of straw disposal. Due to its bulky nature the use of straw results in ever increasing muck heaps and thus the problems of disposal are much more relevant. Straw does not compost as fast as some products and thus takes time to decompose thus causing problems at small yards where space is in short supply.

The use of shavings and shredded paper has been tried as an alternative horse bedding with mixed results. Shavings tend to be too dusty and paper not as absorbent as the straw alternative. Similar problems to straw with regards to disposal has sent many horse owners looking for an alternative horse bedding which until now hasn't been available.

Advances in technology have now seen the use of Wood Pellets as the number one choice for horse bedding. Wood Pellets are made by using a hydraulic press to compress softwood sawdust into 6mm Wood Pellets. The extreme pressure exerted by the press causes heat which in turn melts the sawdusts' natural resins thus binding it together.

Wood Pellets are used sparingly as they 'fluff up' when they become damp thus reducing the overall volume of horse bedding required and thus reducing the waste produced. Daily maintenance is very straight forward. All you need to do is remove any soiled/damp material and top up with a sprinkle of fresh Wood Pellets. The Wood Pellets can be 'fluffed up' with a sprinkling of water from a watering can or by placing them on top of any existing damp material. That's it! the bedding will be as good as new and you will only have used a fraction of the horse bedding you would normally use.

The speed at which your horse bedding can be maintained will free up your time to enjoy the more pleasurable aspects of owning a horse! You can also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you have done your bit for the environment as Wood Pellets are generally produced as a by-product of the timber industry.

We supply Wood Pellets packed into 15kg polythene bags which are available in 250kg, 500kg and 850kg pallet lots.
