Geo-Textile Membranes
Geo-textile membranes are used for a variety of applications and are often an essential component of a project. Geo-textile membranes have 3 main functions, separation, filtration and re-enforcement. Geo-textile membranes may be employed to serve one or all of the afore mentioned functions depending on the circumstances.
Geo-textile membranes used for separation purposes are primarily used to prevent surface dressings dissapearing into the underlying ground (sub-grade), for example on a driveway where MOT Type 1 is used as a sub-base a membrane may be used to prevent the MOT Type 1 from migrating downwards into the underlying ground if conditions required. Geo-textile membranes used for filtration purposes are often employed to prevent land drainage systems from clogging with silt and fines by creating a water permeable barrier preventing fines and silt passing but allowing free movement of water into the drainage channels. Geo-textile membranes used for re-enforcement are often used when constructing banks where a layer of fill material is laid followed by a layer of membrane. This process is repeated until the bank is the correct height. The membrane assists in preventing the sideways movement of the fill layers and helps to stabilise the bank.
