Road Planings/Scalpings
Road planings or road scalpings as they are sometimes known are a highly under rated low cost alternative to many aggregates. Road planings are produced when a cold milling machine is used to remove the upper layer of a tarmac surface. Road planing is usually carried out prior to re-surfacing of roads and pavements. The resulting planed material is discharged into lorries as road planings. There are 2 main types of road planings, processed and un-processed. Un-processed planings are un-screened and un-graded and are often sourced direct from road reconstruction projects around the country. Processed road planings have been passed through a crusher and then screened to produce a consistent grade such as 40mm down (Type 1) for example. This ensures no over sized lumps. Both products are superb and compact very well to form a hard wearing surface that is both cheap and easy to repair if needed. Care must be taken when sourcing road planings as older road surfaces that have been deep planed may contain tars.
