Topsoil and Compost
Good quality topsoil and compost is an essential part of any garden, landscaping or construction project. Poor topsoil results in slow growth of grass, shrubs and plants making a potentially stunning project a dull and barren wasteland. It is therefore essential that the correct topsoil is chosen. The particular type of topsoil or compost chosen will depend on the desired result. For example, topsoil required for seeding a new lawn will need to be screened to ensure all stones and debris is removed in order to give good seed to soil contact and to encourage rapid establishment. Topsoil required to create a planting border maybe of lesser quality depending on the hardiness of the intended plants and shrubs.
Whichever topsoil or compost is chosen it is essential that it is sourced from weed and disease free environments. Much of the topsoil on the market today is sourced from construction projects where the risk of contamination from debris, weeds, diseases and even heavy metals is high. This kind of topsoil is little more than screened muck away containing brick, concrete, plastic and wood fragments which will support nothing but the hardiest of plants (usually weeds!).
