Rock Salt for gritting is supplied in two distinct forms: White Salt and Brown Rock Salt. Brown Rock Salt is mined deep beneath the hills of Cheshire and has a very unique pinky brown tone. First discovered in 1844, Brown Rock Salt is favoured for use on public highways, haulage yards and car parks due to the superior grip offered by the grit like nature of the product. It is advised that this product is not used near entrances to buildings as often the gritty residue will transfer from foot to floor when entering buildings. In this situation, White Salt is favoured.
White Salt for gritting is usually derived by evaporating sea water in huge shallow beds with the resulting salt content left behind in crystal form. This results in a much cleaner finished product more suited for use on paths and entrances to buildings.
