The riding arena sub-base forms the foundation of any all weather riding arena. Whilst providing stability to the final surface, the sub base also acts as a temporary water storage reservoir during periods of heavy rain. This prevents the drainage system from being overloaded ensuring the surface is still useable in the wettest conditions.

It is critical that a free draining sub-base is used. This means using material that has been screened to remove fines which will impede waterflow and block drains further down the line. All too often we are asked to quote for material such as Type 1 or Road Planings as a sub-base material which are entirely unsuitable due to the high fines content.

The choice of riding arena sub-base aggregate available to you will largely be down to your geographical location. Some materials are more abundant in some areas than others. Mainland Aggregates will be able to source the most suitable and cost effective materials available in your area.
