How to measure?

Take a metric tape measure and measure the length, width and depth of the area to be filled. The length and width measurements should be recorded in metres and the depth in millimetres. Now take these figures and enter them into the quantity calculator to reveal the approximate quantity required for your job.

Remember:

1 metre is equivalent to 1000mm or 100cm

1 centimetre is equivalent to 10mm

Puddle Clay Consists of:

Puddle Clay, or Engineering Clay as it is sometimes known, has been used for hundreds of years mainly as lining in the construction of reservoirs, canals and civil engineering although the product is increasingly used for lining and capping of landfill sites to prevent harmful leaching. Historically Puddle Clay was laid in the base of a canal or lake before sheep or cattle were herded round and round to compress (puddle) the clay until it created a waterproof barrier. Thankfully these days we have excavators and sheep foot rollers to do the job!

This product is "as dug" and may be wet or dry depending on weather conditions when extracted. Puddle Clay is not pre-hydrated or pre-puddled. It may be necessary to add water to achieve the desired plasticity. This product is not pottery clay or modelling clay.

Ideal for:

Lake/Reservoir/Canal/Pond lining, landfill capping,

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Puddle Clay?

Puddle clay is a type of clay that has high plasticity and swelling characteristics. It is often used for creating impermeable barriers in construction projects, such as lining ponds, dams, and landfills.

What Can Puddle Clay Be Used For?

Puddle clay is commonly used in the construction of reservoirs, dams, canals, landfill liners, and other water containment structures. It is also used in civil engineering projects to create barriers against water infiltration.

How Does Puddle Clay Prevent Water Seepage?

Puddle clay forms a dense, impermeable barrier when compacted properly. Its high plasticity allows it to seal gaps and prevent water from seeping through, making it an effective material for creating water-resistant layers.

How Do I Calculate The Quantity Of Puddle Clay I Require?

Puddle Clay should be laid at 200-300mm depth when used as a pond or canal lining. Heavier loadings may require deeper depths and may need to be calculated by a structural engineer. Typically, one of our Bulk Bags will cover 5m2 at 100mm depth. For larger areas you may wish to use our quantity calculator located at the top right hand side of this page under the grey "How Much Will I Need" tab. Simply enter your measurements to reveal the required tonnage. Please be sure to enter the length and width figures in metres and the depth in millimetres to give the correct quantity.

How Do I Install Puddle Clay?

Proper compaction is crucial for the effectiveness of Puddle Clay. Adequate compaction ensures that the clay particles are tightly packed, reducing the permeability of the barrier and enhancing its ability to resist water flow. This can be achieved with the use of a sheeps foot roller for larger projects or a hand tamp for smaller domestic projects.

What Are The Specifications For Puddle Clay?

Puddle clay is tested for various properties, including plasticity, permeability, compaction, and swelling. Laboratory tests help ensure that the clay meets the required standards for its intended application.

How Is Puddle Clay Different From Other Types Of Clay?

Puddle clay differs from other clays in its high plasticity and swelling characteristics. These properties make it suitable for applications where a waterproof barrier is required.
