How to measure?

Take a metric tape measure and measure the length, width and depth of the area to be filled. The length and width measurements should be recorded in metres and the depth in millimetres. Now take these figures and enter them into the quantity calculator to reveal the approximate quantity required for your job.

Remember:

1 metre is equivalent to 1000mm or 100cm

1 centimetre is equivalent to 10mm

What Is Economy Silica Sand?:

A fine grade Economy Silica Sand with a mix of rounded and sub-rounded grains. Our Economy Silica Sand can be used in equestrian applications where other additives such as fibre are used to eliminate deep riding caused by rounded grains. This product is particularly useful in areas with unlimited access to water as water will help to reduce deep riding in dry periods. This sand will perform better with moisture and will ride deep when dry unless used in combination with other products. Throughout prolonged dry spells it’s advised that you water the sand. This, with the addition of the rubber chip and/or fibre, will improve firmness, and the performance of the sand. All newly laid Silica Sand surfaces will require a period of settling before performing at their best although this process can be sped up by rolling and watering. It is recommended our Economy Silica Sand be used on free draining areas only as the rounded grains are more prone to hold onto water during the winter months.

Please Note: This sand is not recommended as a standalone surface and will require the addition of water and/or fibre to reduce deep riding. Silica Sand is not sold as any particular colour. Colour will vary according to delivery location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Economy Silica Sand?

Economy Silica Sand is a type of sand specifically selected and processed to be used in combination with fibre or rubber chip for use in horse arenas, gallops, and other equestrian facilities. It's characterised by its fine particle size, sub-rounded grain shape, and high silica content.

What Can Economy Silica Sand Be Used For?

Economy Silica Sand can be used for riding areas, gallops, lunges, turnouts and canter tracks. This sand should not be used as a standalone surface and will require the addition of water and/or fibre or rubber to ensure the surface doesn't ride to deep, particularly during dry periods.

What Is The Difference Between Economy Silica Sand And Premium Silica Sand?

The most obvious difference is the grain shape. Premium Silica Sand is composed of sub-angular grains where as the Economy Silica Sand has more of a rounded to sub-rounded grain shape. Grain shape affects how the particles lock together and thus how firm the surface will ride.

How Do I Calculate The Quantity Of Economy Silica Sand I Require?

Economy Silica Sand should not be used as a standalone surface and we recommend it is installed in combination with our Equus Fibre or Rubber Chip to achieve the best results. Economy Silica Sand should be laid at 100mm depth and topped with rubber chip or fibre. See our Riding Arena Construction Guide

How Do I Install Economy Silica Sand?

Economy Silica Sand should be laid by excavator over a Non-Woven Membrane at 100mm depth. Consistent depth is critical not only to give a firm ride but also to protect the membrane and sub-base underneath. For this reason, it is essential that a laser level be used. The Sand should be compacted by a vibrating roller in layers to ensure compaction is achieved throughout the full depth of Sand. Economy Silica Sand that is too dry will not compact and thus it may be necessary to add water before rolling. For more information on installation see our Riding Arena Construction Guide

Is Economy Silica Sand Safe For Horses?

When properly processed and maintained, Economy Silica Sand is considered safe for horses. However, it's essential to use high-quality sand free from harmful contaminants and to monitor the surface condition regularly to ensure the safety and well-being of the horses. Silica Sand used in enclosed environments should be watered to prevent dust and horses should be prevented from eating off the surface to avoid sand colic.

Is Economy Silica Sand Free Draining?

Economy Silica Sand is free draining. The grading creates voids between the particles which aide the passage of water.
