MOT Type 1X Reduced Fines Consists of:

Type 1X Sub Base is a high-quality, reduced fines aggregate manufactured from durable crushed granite, limestone, basalt or gritstone. Produced to a nominal grading of 40mm down to dust, Type 1X contains fewer fine particles than standard MOT Type 1, creating a coarser, free-draining sub-base with excellent structural performance.

Although visually similar to conventional MOT Type 1, the reduced fines content allows water to drain more efficiently through the material, making it the ideal choice for projects where effective drainage is essential. Type 1X is also comparable to Type 3 Sub Base, but is often more readily available, offering a practical and cost-effective alternative.

The carefully graded blend of particle sizes ensures the material compacts easily to form a strong, stable foundation with outstanding load-bearing capacity. It is suitable for a wide range of construction and civil engineering applications where both strength and permeability are required.

What Can MOT Type 1X Be Used For?

What Is The Difference Between Type 1 & Type 1X?

Type 1 sub-base, often called MOT Type 1, is a well-graded mix of crushed material up to 40 mm in size, including a significant amount of fines (fine particles and dust). These fines allow it to compact into a dense, solid layer, making it excellent for roads, footpaths, driveways, and areas that need strong load-bearing capacity. It’s specified under Clause 803 of the UK Specification for Highway Works (SHW) and is less permeable because of its tightly compacted nature.

Type 1X sub-base, also uses stone up to 40 mm but contains fewer fines, resulting in an open-graded structure with more voids. This makes it highly permeable and suitable for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), permeable pavements, and areas where water drainage through the sub-base is essential. Visually, Type 1X looks coarser than Type 1, with visible gaps between the stones.

How Do I Calculate The Quantity Of MOT Type 1X I Require?

MOT Type 1X should be laid at 150mm depth when used as a driveway sub base for car traffic. Heavier loadings will require a deeper sub-base and may need to be calculated by a structural engineer. Generally path sub bases should be 75mm depth whilst patio sub bases laid at 100mm depth. Typically, one of our Bulk Bags will cover 5m2 at 100mm depth. How Do I Install MOT Type 1X?

MOT Type 1X should be spread with a shovel and compacted with a whacker plate or vibrating roller in layers. It is important the product is properly compacted to prevent settling later on. The depth of installation will depend on the project but we generally recommend 150mm for driveways, 75mm for paths and 100mm depth for patios
