How to measure?

Take a metric tape measure and measure the length, width and depth of the area to be filled. The length and width measurements should be recorded in metres and the depth in millimetres. Now take these figures and enter them into the quantity calculator to reveal the approximate quantity required for your job.

Remember:

1 metre is equivalent to 1000mm or 100cm

1 centimetre is equivalent to 10mm

What Is Fibre Sand?:

Our Fibre Sand is a pre-mixed product consisting of our Premium fine grade, sub-angular Silica Sand mixed with our Equus Premier synthetic carpet fibres to produce a more free draining and stable surface than Silica Sand used on it's own. The rot proof polypropylene carpet fibres act to stabilise the surface by imitating the root like structure of turf to reduce surface penetration from the horses hooves, thus giving a firmer ride.

Our Fibre Sand is suitable for all disciplines whether it be dressage, jumping or general use and can be maintained with a tined harrow.

Using pre-mixed Fibre Sand eliminates the need for initial on site mixing by power harrow, resulting in reduced cost and no risk of damage to delicate membranes. Laying a pre-mixed Fibre Sand surface ensures carpet fibre is present throughout the full depth of the surface rather than only the top 2 inches of surface as occurs with on site mixing. Fibre Sand will perform best when moist. Prolonged dry conditions and poor maintenance may cause fibres to rise to the surface. If this happens, it is recommended the surface be watered and harrowed until the desired level of mixing is achieved before normal use is resumed. Equus Fibre is not recommended for exposed areas at risk of high winds as surface fibre may be lost.

We recommend a depth of 6 inches (150mm) if used on its own or 4 inches (100mm) if used with a rubber topping. Fibre Sand should be compacted when damp with a vibrating roller when first installed.

FAQ

What is Fibre Sand?

Fibre Sand is a specially blended equestrian surface consisting of our pre-consumer Stabilising Fibres blended with our Premium Silica Sand

What Can Fibre Sand Be Used For?

Fibre Sand can be used as a standalone surface for riding areas, gallops, lunges, turnouts and canter tracks.

Why Would I Use Fibre Sand Instead of Silica Sand & Rubber Chip?

Fibre Sand is an excellent surface for situations where a firm surface is required. The root like structure of the fibres helps to spread the weight of the horse's hooves whilst also retaining moisture during dry periods. Lack of moisture is the main cause of surfaces riding deeper.

How Do I Calculate The Quantity of Fibre Sand I Require?

Fibre Sand can be used as a standalone surface. We recommend it be laid at 150mm depth and compacted with a roller. Typically, you will require 200kg of Fibre Sand per square meter of area. For more information on Riding Arena Construction please see our Riding Arena Construction Guide

How Do I Install Fibre Sand?

Fibre Sand should be laid by excavator over a Non-Woven Membrane at 150mm depth. Consistent depth is critical not only to give a firm ride but also to protect the membrane and sub-base underneath. For this reason, it is essential that a laser level be used. The Fibre Sand should be compacted by a vibrating roller in layers to ensure compaction is achieved throughout the full depth. Fibre Sand that is too dry will not compact and thus it may be necessary to add water before rolling. For more information on installation see our Riding Arena Construction Guide

Is Fibre Sand Free Draining?

Yes, Fibre Sand is free draining although the fibres themselves will hold on to moisture for longer than a standalone sand surface.
