Take a metric tape measure and measure the length, width and depth of the area to be filled. The length and width measurements should be recorded in metres and the depth in millimetres. Now take these figures and enter them into the quantity calculator to reveal the approximate quantity required for your job.
Remember:
1 metre is equivalent to 1000mm or 100cm
1 centimetre is equivalent to 10mm
Our high-quality Play Bark is a natural, impact-absorbing surface material, sourced exclusively from responsibly managed British forests. Unlike many products marketed as 'play bark', which are often simply play chips containing no actual bark content, our Play Bark consists of genuine bark, providing superior cushioning and aesthetic appeal.
Specially designed for children's play areas, our Play Bark has been rigorously tested and certified to meet safety standards BSEN 4790:1978 (flame retardancy) and BSEN 1176:2008 (impact attenuation for playground equipment). This ensures it offers excellent shock-absorbing properties, reducing the risk of injury from falls — making it ideal for use under swings, slides, climbing frames, and other equipment where falls from height may occur.
In addition to its safety benefits, Play Bark also offers excellent drainage properties, helping to keep play areas usable even after heavy rain. Its natural appearance blends beautifully into outdoor environments, providing a soft, attractive surface that is gentle on hands, feet, and knees.
Our Play Bark Is:
- Sourced from sustainable British forests
- Fully tested and certified for safety
- Naturally attractive and low maintenance
- Long lasting and weather resistant
- Free from contaminants, pests and harmful substances

Play bark, also known as play bark chips or playground bark, is a type of safety surface material used in playgrounds and play areas. It is made from shredded or chipped bark from various tree species and is designed to provide a cushioned surface to help reduce the risk of injury from falls.
Play Bark can be used for play areas where there is a risk of falling from height. When installed and maintained correctly, Play Bark is considered safe for children to play on. It meets safety standards for impact attenuation and is designed to reduce the risk of injuries from falls. However, it's essential to ensure that the Play Bark material used is certified to meet safety standards and is free from contaminants or harmful chemicals.
Play Bark provides several benefits, including impact absorption to cushion falls, reducing the risk of injuries such as bruises and fractures. It also helps to create a natural-looking play surface, encourages imaginative play, and is generally considered safer than hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt.
The recommended depth of Play Bark can vary depending on the height of the equipment and the type of play being conducted. In general, a minimum depth of 6 inches (15 centimeters) is recommended for play areas with equipment up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) in height. For higher equipment, a greater depth may be necessary to provide adequate impact absorption.
Play Bark should be spread with a rake or shovel at 100-150mm depth. Loose impact surfaces, such as Play Bark, are made from natural materials. During the manufacturing and screening process a very small proportion of larger pieces of wood, referred to as ‘wood shards’, may fall through the screens and be included in the finished product. If these wood shards are considered to be a hazard to the intended use, they can be physically removed, by hand, once the surface has been installed. See Play Bark Installation Guide
Yes, Play Bark requires regular maintenance to ensure its effectiveness and safety. This may include raking or leveling the surface to redistribute the bark chips, removing debris and foreign objects, and replenishing the bark as needed to maintain the recommended depth.
The longevity of Play Bark depends on various factors such as climate, soil conditions, and how heavily it is used. In general, it can last for one to three years before needing to be replenished. In wet climates, Play Bark may decompose more quickly and require more frequent replenishment.
