Ways of Using Scottish Pebbles

Scottish pebbles are small, rounded decorative stones that are sourced from Scotland, typically from the beaches of the Scottish Highlands. Also called Highland pebbles or Caledonian pebbles, Scottish pebbles are naturally rounded and smooth due to erosion and come in a variety of colours that will stand out in wet conditions.

Scottish cobbles are also available for those looking for larger stones. At Mainland Aggregates, we supply a range of both Scottish pebbles and Scottish cobbles, including 50-80mm Scottish cobbles and 80-120mm Scottish cobbles. Cobbles are better suited for larger projects, such as filling gabion baskets to create a gabion wall.

How to clean Scottish pebbles?

Decorative stones can be cleaned by brushing them with a broom and hosing them down to get rid of dirt. For decorative stones that have mould or algae, it is recommended to soak them with vinegar or brush them with a mixture of water and vinegar and then rinse them off with a hose.

These types of pebbles can be used for a variety of applications. You might be looking for ways to incorporate Scottish pebbles in your garden. Perhaps you are curious to know about different ways of using Scottish pebbles. Either way, we have put together some of the most popular Scottish pebbles applications.

For water features.

Scottish pebbles reveal their true colours when wet making them perfect for water features. Additionally, these pebbles are also fish-friendly rocks that will not harm aquatic life, being perfect for fish ponds. These are suitable for all kinds of water features, from fountains to ponds.

For borders.

Even though Scottish pebbles feature fairly muted colours when dry, these are still a great addition to any garden space. This includes garden borders as Scottish pebbles will beautifully complement a colourful garden whilst providing a functional border.

Pebbles will help reduce weed growth and improve water drainage and retention when added on top of the soil. Not only are pebbles functional for plant pots but will also add some character and more colour to plants.

For pathways.

Due to their smooth and rounded shape, Scottish pebbles are comfortable to walk on top of. Scottish pebbles can also be used as a natural and beautiful edging to pathways.
