The riding arena sub-base is extremely important as not only does it provide the foundation for the riding arena but it is also an integral part of the drainage system. It is important that an angular, screened aggregate with a good compressive strength is used. Typically the ideal size is 75-40mm which gives an aggregate with a big enough grading range to allow compaction with the absence of fines. Single sized products such as 40mm gravel should not be used as they will not compact. The material must be angular to ensure adequate compaction and also screened to prevent fines interfering with the drainage system. The optimum depth of sub-base for a riding arena is 150mm (6 inches) although in some circumstances 100mm (4 inches) is sufficient.
