Allotment Project in Hertfordshire: Using Mainland Aggregates' Nutrient-Rich Topsoil

In recent years, allotments have become more popular across the UK, and known as eco-friendly spaces where individuals can cultivate their own produce and connect with nature. In this blog, we will highlight one of our clients’ allotment projects in Hertfordshire. We will focus on; the problems they first had with their project, why they chose Mainland Aggregates screened topsoil, some of their project goals, and how they accomplished them.

Main Problems with their Allotment Project

Due to our client's location, most of their soil was poor due to its composition of clay and stones. This was hardly ideal for the variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruits our client wanted in their raised beds.

This type of soil restricted water and nutrient flow which are crucial elements for healthy plant growth. Such conditions can stifle root development and weaken plant vitality, making it almost impossible to achieve the lush, productive plot the client dreamed of. Recognising these issues, the decision was clear: replacing the soil was essential.

The Transformation Process

The transformation of the allotment began with the removal of the old soil from the newly installed raised beds. Once the delivery of the two 850kg Bulk Bags of Mainland Aggregates Screened Topsoil arrived, our client got to work and the raised beds were filled with nutrients.

This revitalised the garden and allowed the client to prepare the ground for planting. They prepared the beds and ensuring the soil was levelled and raked accordingly.

Once this was done, they planted fruits such as strawberries, vegetables such as potatoes, as well as some herbs. Although not ready to eat yet, these plants are already showing positive signs of growth due to their leaves poking through the soil after one week.
