What are gabion stones?

Gabion stones are one of the most commonly used materials to fill gabion baskets. Gabion stone is a natural way of filling gabion baskets to create an aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound gabion wall or structure.

What size are gabion stones?


Gabion stones are often between 80mm–200mm in size to be suitable for the baskets. If stones are smaller than this, they would easily slip through the holes.

   

How much gabion stone do I need?


The amount of gabion stone required will depend on the size of the project and the project’s requirements. Depending on your specific project and budget, the amount of gabion stone needed will vary.

You might want to completely fill gabions baskets with one type of gabion stone or you might want to fill the front facing part of the baskets with a more visually appealing stone, such as 80-120mm Scottish cobbles, and then fill the rest with cheaper stone or rubble. Recycled gabion fill is a great fill material consisting of crushed concrete, brick and the occasional asphalt.

York gabion stone

    


This hard, angular carboniferous limestone features a mixture of grey and cream shades. The York Gabion Stone is between 200-300mm in size and is an incredibly hardwearing gabion stone. This product should not be confused with York Stone.

Rustic gabion stone

    


The Rustic Gabion Stone is a 75-250mm angular stone that features brown, white, black and buff shades. This stone is predominantly quartz but also contains flint and limestone. This is a beautiful and unique stone that will uplift the look of any space.

Graphite slate gabion stone

    


If you are looking for small gabion stone, the Graphite Slate Gabion Stone is a fantastic choice. It consists of 50-100mm stone that features blue and grey colours that are subtle when dry but bright and striking when wet. This stone is better suited for gabions with 50mm mesh.

Can you fill gabions will other materials?


Even though gabion stones are the most popular way of filling gabion baskets, these wire cages can be filled with various other materials. This includes tiles, bricks, natural elements, such as pine cones, or even repurposing recycled materials, such as plastic bottles.
