Can I Use MOT Type 1 for a Patio?

Views

If you’re planning to build a new patio, choosing the right base material is one of the most important steps in the process. A strong foundation ensures your paving stays level, drains properly, and lasts for years without movement or sinking. One material that is commonly used for this purpose is Type 1 MOT. But can you actually use it for a patio? The short answer is yes. Here's why...

What Is MOT Type 1?

MOT Type 1 is a crushed aggregate made from materials such as granite, limestone, or recycled concrete. It contains a mixture of particle sizes ranging from around 40mm down to fine dust. This blend is important because it allows the material to compact tightly, creating a firm and stable base layer.

Because of its strength and load-bearing qualities, MOT Type 1 is widely used in construction projects across the UK. It is commonly used for road bases, driveways, pathways, and patio foundations.

Why MOT Type 1 Works Well for Patios

The main reason builders and landscapers use MOT Type 1 for patios is its ability to compact into a solid surface. When properly installed and compacted, it creates a stable base that prevents paving slabs from shifting over time.

Another advantage is drainage. While the material compacts firmly, it still allows water to move through the structure rather than sitting directly under the slabs. This helps reduce issues such as frost damage or movement caused by trapped water.

MOT Type 1 is also relatively easy to work with and widely available, making it a practical option for both professional landscapers and DIY projects.

How It Is Typically Used

When laying a patio, MOT Type 1 is usually installed as the sub-base layer beneath the paving. The typical process involves:

  • Excavating the patio area to the required depth

  • Adding a layer of MOT Type 1 (usually around 75–100mm thick)

  • Compacting it thoroughly using a plate compactor

  • Adding a layer of sharp sand or mortar on top before laying the slabs

Proper compaction is key. Without it, even a good sub-base material will not perform as expected.

A Reliable Foundation for Your Patio

Using Type 1 MOT from Mainland Aggregates is a reliable way to create a strong patio foundation. Its blend of particle sizes allows it to compact tightly while still offering good drainage, helping your paving stay stable and level over time.

Whether you are installing a small garden seating area or a large patio for entertaining, starting with a well-prepared base will make a huge difference to the finished result. With the right preparation and materials, your patio can remain solid and attractive for many years to come.
