How to use MOT type 3

MOT type 3 is a sub-base material that consists of pure crushed granite, clean crushed concrete, limestone or basalt. This sub-base material might be 75mm or 40mm down depending on the quarried location. MOT type 3 sub base has been screened to create a reduced fines aggregate, making it one of the most widely used sub-bases when a product with fewer fines is required.

What does MOT stand for?

MOT stands for Ministry of Transport. This sub-base can also be referred to as DOT type 3, which refers to the Department of Transport. Aggregates that have MOT or DOT in the name have been approved to be used in the construction of highways and pavements by these organisations.

To be called type 3 MOT, this product must be a quality aggregate that complies with clause 805 (SHW 805) of the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works.

Is MOT type 3 permeable?

Yes, this sub-base is permeable and allows water to free drain due to the reduced fines content. This makes MOT type 3 a great sub-base for sports pitches, tennis courts or any other areas where blockage of drains is an issue with type 1 MOT.

MOT type 3 vs type 1.

These two sub-bases may look visually similar. However, they are completely two different types of sub-bases. Type 3 contains less fines than Type 1 and is designed for projects that require drainage and full permeability. Type 1 is designed for projects that need a firm sub-base, being easily compactable with excellent load-bearing capabilities.

What is MOT type 3 used for?

Type 3 MOT is better suited for projects where a SUDS (Sustainable Drainage System) is to be installed. This sub-base can also be used in areas where reducing drain blockages is necessary, such as equestrian arenas. MOT Type 3 can be used as a sub-base for many applications, including:

  • -        Driveways
  • -        Sports pitches
  • -        Tennis courts
  • -        Equestrian arenas
  • -        Paths
  • -        Car parking spaces
  • -        Haul roads
  • -        Patios

This aggregate can also be used as a filling product in construction.
