When to use MOT Type 1?

MOT Type 1 is a certified sub-base material that consists of crushed granite, gritstone, limestone or basalt. Also called Type 1 MOT or DOT Type 1, this sub-base features particles with excellent load-bearing qualities that range from 40mm down to dust, making them easy to compact.

What is MOT and DOT?

MOT stands for Ministry of Transport whilst DOT stands for Department of Transport. Our MOT Type 1 sub-base complies with the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works, clause 803 (SHW 803).

When to use MOT Type 1?

MOT Type 1 sub-base can be used for haul roads, building sub-bases, hard-standings, patio sub-bases, highway sub-bases and driveway sub-bases. These sub-base aggregates are suited for applications that require certified material to be used, such as the construction of public roads.

How does MOT Type 1 differ from standard sub-base?

A sub-base is used to provide an extra layer of support to overlying surfaces whilst helping spread the load evenly over the subgrade. Thus, having a sub-base is essential for patios, driveways and other types of paving.

However, should you opt for standard sub-base aggregates or certified sub-base aggregates? The main difference between the two is that MOT Type 1 is approved to be used in the construction of pavements and highways by the Department of Transport. This approval highlights the high quality of MOT Type 1 aggregates.

At Mainland Aggregates, we supply a wide selection of sub-base materials, from certified sub-bases to standard sub-bases. This includes quarried sub-base aggregates, such as MOT Type 3, as well as recycled sub-base aggregates, such as road planings.
