What Is Silica Sand?

Silica sand, also known as quartz sand and industrial sand, is a common type of sand that can be found worldwide. However, there are only a few locations where true sub-angular silica sand can be found. At Mainland Aggregates, we supply a selection of silica sand, and today, we are going to answer any and all silica sand related questions you might have.

What can silica sand be used for?

Silica sand is used for various purposes all across different sectors and industries. This type of sand can be used as a raw material in the making of construction products, such as flooring, mortars and concrete. In equestrian settings, silica sand is used for equestrian surfaces alongside other additives such as fibre to eliminate deep riding caused by rounded grain.

Can silica sand be used in concrete?

Some silica sand, depending on the size, can be used as a partial replacement for cement when making a concrete mix.

Why put silica sand on artificial grass?

Silica sand can be used as infill for artificial turf to help the grass blades stand upright and help the grass retain its shape. It also provides additional cushioning, giving a natural feel to artificial grass, similar to the feeling of soil and non-artificial grass.

How much silica sand for artificial turf?

It is recommended to apply around 4kg of silica sand per square metre of artificial turf.

Does silica sand absorb moisture?

Some silica sands absorb moisture better than others. Our economy silica sand features rounded grains which are more prone to hold onto water during the winter months. So, this type of sand is more suited for free-draining areas. While our premium silica sand, with fine sub-angular grains, promotes effective drainage and improved compaction.

Where to buy silica sand?

Silica sand can be purchased at Mainland Aggregates. We stock economy silica sand and premium silica sand. Both of these are suitable for equestrian surfaces. These sands are available online in bulk bags or loose by the tonne.

Economy silica sand is a fine grade sand with a mix of rounded and sub-rounded grains, which is ideal for areas with unlimited access to water in order to reduce deep riding in dry periods. Our premium silica sand is the perfect choice for riding arenas, lunges, gallops, race tracks and more. This high-quality equestrian sand will not only improve firmness but will also provide a comfortable and cushioned ride.

Note: our silica sand is not sold by colour.
